Special Exhibition
"Corot: Souvenirs et Variations"
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796 - 1875) is an important painter who is regarded as the last Neoclassicist and the first Modern style painter in the world of French 19th.century art. He studied painting in the classical traditions of Italy and France and visited many places, where he worked out-of-doors, painting landscapes and scenes from nature with unchanging and extraordinary sensitivity. His work "Souvenir de Mortefontaine" (1864), which he created in his studio from his recollections of previously-visited landscapes, is one of his masterpieces of this genre. He also produced portrait masterpieces - although these were not often displayed in his lifetime - such as "Woman with a Pearl" (1858 - 68) and "Woman in Blue" (1874). These works inspired the emergence of Impressionist and Cubisme painters in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibition presents a comprehensive illustration of Corot?s work by means of 78 landscape, portrait and narrative paintings, together with the above- mentioned masterpieces from the Louvre Collection and others.
In addition to these works by Corot, the exhibition includes 22 paintings by artists who were deeply influenced by him, such as Sisley, Renoir, Braque and Monet.
