2008 Summer Special Exhibition
hRhyta: Ancient Sacred Drinking Vesselsh
It was created in West Asia about three thousand years ago by combining the ancient horn|shaped and animal|shaped vessels that existed in the Neolithic period in the Eurasian Continent. They were sacred vessels indispensable in sacred ceremoniesC probably because of the special meaning of their shapes.
This exhibition introduces animal|shaped Rhyta dating back over four thousand years and traces myths and legends that might be associated with them. Please explore the artifacts of RhytaC which spread from the Mediterranean to the Central Asia with the emergence of the Persian Empire followed by Alexander the Great.
