A travelling priest (in fact, Hojo Tokiyori) seeks shelter at night, during a snowstorm, at Sano Tsuneyoユs home. Tsuneyo, who is in straitened circumstances, initially refuses, but then relents and welcomes him into his house. In order to warm his guest, he sacrifices his remaining three valuable dwarf trees (Hachinoki) by burning them. Later, he tells the visitor of his loyalty to Kamakura. When the government in Kamakura summons warriors to return, Tsuneyo rushes to the capital, where he is identified by Tokiyori, who gives him three estates in recompense for the trees.

Western and Eastern masked comedies combine in this dream-like performance, involving Kyogen, the universally popular Japanese comedy, and commedia dell'arte, the Italian improvisational masked play that dates back to the sixteenth century.
"Lecture and Demonstration" Lectures on the knowledge and dramaturgy of Kyogen and of commedia dell'arte will be accompanied by the demonstration of performance.
Kyogen"Oba-ga-sake (The Stingy Aunt and her Sake)" Taro Kaja goes to visit his Aunt, who owns a sake shop. She is mean and has never offered him even one sip of sake. He tries many ways to get some from her on this occasion, but she remains impervious to his efforts. Pretending to go home, the nephew wears a demon mask, threatens her and tries to drink her sakeノ..
Commedia dellユarte "Il Servitore di Due Perdoni (The Servant of Two Masters)" Arlecchino, a servant, works for two masters by pretending to be two different people. This is the most famous play by Carlo Goldoni, the 18th-century Venetian playwright.
New production "TONTO Nusutto (Thief)" A timid, dim-witted Italian sneaks at midnight into the large home of a rich man in Osaka. He tries to steal what he wants but the owner, alerted by the noise, discovers him... This is the first ever collaboration between Kyogen and commedia dell'arte. "Tonto" means "stupid" in Italian. Playwright and Composition by Tadashi Ogasawara. Major actors Tadashi Ogasawara, Angelo Crotti |
